Research

As the only specialized museum of its kind in Finland, the Theatre Museum’s collections are a key part of the research infrastructure for the performing arts in Finland and an important source for researchers of Finnish performing arts. In addition to the collection of objects, researchers also have access to the museum’s extensive archives.

The museum’s own basic research is material-based and mainly involves clarifying and cataloguing information on collection materials such as costumes, models and photographs. The museum supports research by, among other things, gathering information on performances and performers in the performing arts. The museum also carries out contemporary documentation.

Together with TINFO – Theater Information Center, the museum maintains the Ilona performance database, which is a key source of information on professional theater performances in Finland from the 19th century onwards. The database serves researchers and students in the field, as well as anyone interested in the history of the performing arts.

The Theater Museum can engage in project-based research collaboration with various parties in projects related to the museum’s own collections or in which the museum’s collections play a significant role. These projects require separate funding.
